The residents of Riverview are proud of the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage and its unique architectural qualities. Riverview is located in the western quadrant of Algiers and on the Westbank of the Mississippi River. Easily accessible by the Crescent City Bridge, Riverview is a quick Canal Street ferry ride away from the French Quarter and Downtown New Orleans. For the purposes of this planning study, the Riverview Study Area is de- fined by Opelousas Avenue to the north, Behrman Avenue to the east, Mardi Gras Boulevard to the south, and Brooklyn Avenue to the west.
Algiers Point is one of the significant residential communities surrounding The Riverview Study Area. It’s cultural and historical significance contributed to placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and to local historic district designation in 1994. The Algiers Point Historic District extends to Newton Street, which is within the Riverview Study Area.
While the Riverview neighborhood was not flooded after the storm, it suffers from economic underdevelopment. EnviRenew hopes that new and refurbished homes for first responders and teachers will provide a sense of stability and growth for all residents. EnviRenew aims to build new and better homes as a foundation and critical piece in a comprehensive approach to neighborhood revitalization.
